Brown noise

A low, steady rumble, without the bright edge of white noise. This is brown noise on its own: no rain texture, no moving fan layer.

Free · no sign-up

Your current timer applies. Free sessions last up to 60 minutes and fade gently; you can start again whenever you like. Start at a low device volume.

What you'll hear

Brown noise puts more emphasis on low frequencies than pink or white noise. On a small phone speaker, those lows can be faint; turning the device up to compensate can make other sounds unexpectedly loud. Start low and choose the sound your speaker reproduces comfortably.

When to try it

Try it when a bright hiss feels distracting and you prefer a darker background. It may soften the contrast of some low-level disturbances, but deep rumble will not reliably hide every voice, sharp click or street sound. Brown noise is not a treatment for insomnia.

Evidence for continuous noise improving sleep is limited and mixed. Read our sources and limitations. These adult listening pages are not infant safety guidance; parents should start with Baby mode.

Make it your own

The starting mix contains only brown noise. In Mix, keep Rain and Airflow at zero to retain that character; add either deliberately if you want texture. Changing the noise colour changes the balance of low and high frequencies rather than the device volume.

Is Gentle Fan the same as pure brown noise?

Not here. The Gentle Fan quick start includes fan-like airflow. This page starts a separate Pure Brown preset, so you can hear brown noise without that moving layer.
